The Benefits of Eating a Low Carb Diet

Following a low carb diet is a healthier way to shed unwanted pounds. There are many fad diets and weight loss products offered on TV and on the internet. Most of them do not work or have undesirable side effects. The products available that claim a person can eat what he or she wants can cause diarrhea, abdominal cramps and imbalance of essential minerals. Fad programs can be difficult to stick to and may require buying some unusual types of foods a person is unaccustomed to eating.

It is acceptable to try new fruits or vegetables when trying to lose weight. However, a person wanting to shed some extra pounds should not have to hunt for foods that are seasonal or that the store does not carry regularly. There are plenty of items in the produce section that can satisfy hunger if prepared in an attractive manner.

Many foods, including vegetables, are more tasty when they look as good as they taste. Try a combination of peas, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots in stir fry with chicken or fish. The use of sunflower or sesame oil will give the dish an Asian flavor. Adding a small amount of soy or teriyaki sauce will give the dish plenty of flavor.

For an evening snack try munching on some sunflower seeds, grapes, orange slices, and berries, instead of cheese and crackers or chips. A low carb diet does not require eliminating starches altogether. It does require limiting the amount of starches consumed.

Breads, cakes, crackers, and cookies are high in starch. So are rice, potatoes, and pasta. Even reducing the amount one puts on the plate can be helpful. Rather than eliminate starches entirely, try to limit the portions to one small serving of pasta and one slice of bread each day or one half a baked potato and one serving of crackers.

Replacing many of the starchy foods with vegetables and fruits can produce results over time. Over time an individual will have more energy and will feel better from getting extra nutrients. Eating more healthy foods will become a habit over time and make weight reduction easier.

While avoiding many starches an individual should remember to lose the breading on meats like fried chicken and fried steak or pork chops. Instead try marinating meats in a favorite low calorie salad dressing or make a rub with a combination of herbs and spices. Bake or grill the meat instead of frying. This is a good way to stick to a low carb diet that will also help reduce the amount of fat consumed.
