All You Need to Know About the Lap Band at a Glance

The majority of the people who hear about the lap band for the very first time tend to pose several questions about it. They typically express interest in knowing what the said lap band is, how it is used, when it is used and who can use it. Those are the questions we now venture to find answers to, as we examine ‘all you need to know about the lap band’ briefly.

What is the lap band?

The lapband is a weight loss device. But when we talk of it as a weight loss device, one may be forgiven for mistaking it to be a device used for exercising (because that is what many of used to seeing, whenever ‘weight loss devices’ are talked about). But in this case, you come to realize that this is a device which facilitates weight loss through another mechanism. It is actually a device which is implanted into the body, somewhere along the gastrointestinal channel, in order to deal with the weight problem at its root. Thus, to the ‘what’ question, the best answer would be to the effect that the band in question is actually a weight loss device.

How is the lap band used?

As mentioned earlier, this is a weight loss device that is implanted into the body, to deal with the weight loss problem at its root. The implantation is actually done by way of surgery. But this is not the conventional surgery which involves opening up a whole body system. Rather, the bands are implanted through another form of surgery, known as laparoscopic surgery, which is by definition minimally invasive surgery.

Incisions are supposed to be made in the body, and the band carefully inserted through one of these (incisions) using instruments that have long flexible handles. The whole process is monitored through a camera, whose entry into the body (via an incision) precedes the entry of the ‘band-bearing’ instruments. Once the band is at the right place, the camera and long-handled instruments used in its installation are removed, the incisions sewn, and the surface surgically cleaned. The procedure is then deemed complete. With the lap band in the body, it becomes just a matter of time, before the person ‘hosting’ it starts seeing remarkable – and virtually guaranteed — weight loss results.

When should the lap band be used?

It is best used after all other weight loss methods, such as exercise regimes, well-structured diets and weight loss supplements have been used, with no success. The idea is not just to have tried these other methods half-heartedly. Rather, the idea is to have tried them with all sincerity, but with no success. At that stage, one can contemplate turning to lap bands – whose insertion, as we have seen, involves surgery (hence the care with which the whole idea should be approached).

Who can use the lap band?

Anybody who has sincerely tried other less invasive weight loss methods without success qualifies to have a band installed, so long as they are in reasonable physical and psychological health. For ladies, it would also be mandatory to ascertain that they are not planning on getting pregnant within a year. Physical problems, such as heart and lung conditions, as well as anatomical deformities could also disqualify a person from having a lap band implanted.
