Why there is nothing sweet about Sugar when it comes to losing weight
The number one enemy of anyone trying to lose weight has to be sugar. I know it adds taste to so many things and we believe life would be dreadful without it, but it needs to go if you are trying to shed excess pounds.
Sugar stimulates the production of too much insulin in your system. It is no coincidence that a significant number of people who have diabetes are overweight. And if your BMI is over 30, your chances of getting type 2 diabetes rises dramatically. Too much insulin causes your blood sugar to plummet and this will cause your body to store the food you eat as fat. You will also suffer from cravings and we all know how hard they are to ignore.
Sugar has also been linked to cancer partly because it feeds the cancer cells and partly because this sweet substance interferes with the working of your digestive system. This prevents us taking in the nutrients that we require to fight diseases.
Another reason to avoid or reduce the amount in your diet is the fact that your body works best at a certain ph level. Sugar causes too much acidity which in turn is a breeding ground for bacteria and other pests such as Candida. Yeast infections are very common in people who consume too much. Drinking lemon juice can help your body return to a more natural state.
So how can you reduce your consumption of the white stuff? You need to cut white foods out of your diet so no more white flour, pasta, rice or noodles. If you take it in your coffee try ditching the caffeine habit. If you can’t do that, cut down on your intake and use brown instead of white although it isn’t much healthier!
Avoid processed foods as much as you can. Food in its natural state will contain natural sugars but these are not as dangerous as the processed variety.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day but not when it is made up of sugary cereals. You should eat fruit and oats for this meal in addition to wholegrain bread. Eating fruit can cause your blood sugar levels to spike but you will reduce this effect if you eat seeds or nuts with the fruit.
Watch out for diet foods. There is a whole industry dedicated to producing these foods but if you look at the ingredients you will find they contain a lot of sugar or artificial sweeteners which can increase your cravings. Natural honey is a good substitute and you should find that you do not need very much as it is very sweet. It is also a natural bacteria fighting agent so will help sort out any underlying problem caused by previous over consumption of sweet things.
Maple syrup is a good alternative as it contains manganese and zinc, important trace minerals. But don’t go swopping one addiction for the other as your waistline will not thank you.
